- Description
- Reducing the operational energy of residential buildings is an effective means of conserving energy and mitigating greenhouse effects. Installing rigid insulation boards at the edges of the house slab perimeter is one potential way of effectively reducing the operational energy. In this study, an experimental investigation was conducted on two full-scale housing modules on the University of Newcastle campus with typical slab-on-ground footing systems to investigate the effects of rigid insulation boards installed along the slab edges. The data collected from the in-situ experiments indicated that the heat transfer (or temperature fluctuations) at the edges and corners of the ground floor was 1.6–2.1 times more active than for the core regions of the concrete floor. With extruded polystyrene (XPS) boards adhered to the edges of the floor perimeter, the annual operational energy loss (or accumulated heat flux) via the ground floor was effectively mitigated, with a reduction of more than 20% of the heat loss through the ground floor of the testing module of the study, corresponding to an annual reduction of 26.29 MJ/m2. Besides, the slab-edge-insulation (SEI) boards showed different levels of thermal effects when they were installed at different depth around floor slabs. In this study, the insulation installed at ground level was 4.5 times more effective on reducing the temperature fluctuations on edge surface than its counterpart installed at 150 mm below ground level.
